Abstract: Tianjin is located on the coast of the Bohai Sea in the North China Plain. The water system in the territory serves as a hub for connecting the northern and southern regions and maritime traffic. Tianjin has produced many types of financial organisations in Chinese traditional and modern society, relying on its important geographical location. The foreign and traditional financial organisations emerged in modern Tianjin because of the prosperous trade and shaped the financial centre in northern China.
This study examines the interrelationship of financial organisations at different historical stages and corresponds it to urban space, revealing the evolution process of the urban financial space in modern Tianjin. The overall performance of this process is the migration of the urban financial centre from traditional areas to concession areas. Further, eventually, the only financial centre was formed in the Anglo-French Municipal Concession in Tianjin.
Foreign banks, Yinhao banks and Chinese banks are all participants and shapers of financial space in the district. From the end of the 19th century to 1914, the domestic financial organisations, Piaohao, Yinhao and Chinese banks, were centred in the old town, while foreign banks were concentrated in the Anglo-French Municipal Concession area. The West Street of Tianjin old town became the centre of the distribution of local financial organisations in China due to its higher financial status than East Street. Further, the Middle Street in the Anglo-French Municipal Concession became the centre of distribution of foreign banks after a brief adjustment of the location. The relocation of the main distribution space of Chinese banks from Tianjin old town to the concession mainly occurred between 1914 and 1927, transforming the financial space of modern Tianjin from a dual centre to a single centre.
Eventually, Tianjin became the biggest financial city in north China, and the middle street is the main body of the financial space in the city, known as "Oriental Wall Street". Chinese banks dominated the migration of local financial organisations from the old town to the concession area and expanded the form of this financial space, eventually becoming the dominant financial organisation in the district.
Existing studies have emphasised the dominant role of the Middle Road in this district and foreign banks on both sides in forming this financial space. This study finds that the distribution feature of financial organisations is closely related to development strategies and financial statuses in different periods. The traditional financial organisations (Yinhao and Chinese banks) are also participants and shapers of financial space in the district, expanding the form of financial space from a "financial road"  to a "financial district".
Among the study of financial organisations in modern Tianjin, the research on urban history is mostly carried out from the perspectives of various financial organisations' nature, connection, and development statuses. Meanwhile, research on the interrelationship of various financial organisations and the corresponding evolution process of financial space is still insufficient. This study investigates the interrelationships of financial organisations at important historical nodes. Further, it corresponds to a wider urban space to reveal the evolution process of modern Tianjin's urban financial space under the mutual influence of various financial organisations. The evolution and migration of Tianjin's financial space in modern times corresponded with the influence of the concession on the urban form of Tianjin and is an important part of the modernisation process of Tianjin. The study of this process provides insight into Tianjin's urban modernisation and provides a theoretical basis for the protection planning of the historic district.
