Abstract: Nowadays, there is a universal tendency to open university resources to surrounding communities and build up collaborative relations together. This tendency leads to the emerging dynamic university boundary space between the university and its surroundings, which provides various functions for multiple user groups. However, it is a challenge to balance the demands of diverse activities and spatial needs for different groups there. In this study, we investigate the spatial satisfaction of residents and students who are using the university boundary space in South China Agricultural University, aiming to offer a set of landscape design principles for this interface promoting the satisfaction and happiness of different user groups.
We integrate qualitative research and quantitative statistical analysis based on SPSS, such as drawing a boxplot, independent sample T test, and establishing a regression equation model. Then we analyze the spatial satisfaction differences among users and their causes, which could be used to assist in the optimization of decision-making.
The results are as follows: (1) residents and students both have a high evaluation of the "overall spatial satisfaction", "green space" and "spatial openness" but a low evaluation of "campus services and facilities"; (2) residents' overall satisfaction with space is significantly higher than students', and residents have higher satisfaction than students for almost all factors; (3) there are common and significant influencing factors for the overall satisfaction—"green space" and "cultural facilities". The different factors are "environmental safety" and "resting facilities".
According to the results, we can focus on the optimization of "green space", "cultural facilities", "environmental safety" and "resting facilities" to improve the overall spatial satisfaction of the users and promote the reciprocal relationship between universities and communities.
First of all, we should optimize the spatial layout of green space and the resource allocation of cultural facilities. For one thing, universities should strengthen the management and maintenance of green landscapes and create high-quality green open spaces. For another, we consider allocating public cultural facilities in the university boundary as an effective approach, which can increase income for universities and alleviate the pressure on the provision of cultural facilities.
Moreover, we propose to strengthen environmental safety management and improve resting facilities. On the one hand, universities should be open to the public under surveillance and access control. On the other hand, it is necessary to improve the configuration and density of resting facilities to meet the needs of students and residents.
Last but not least, we suggest leveraging advanced educational resources of universities to offer communities lifelong learning opportunities, while nurturing the economy, innovation, and general prestige of the city.
