Abstract: As an important part of the urban ecological environment, garden plants play an essential role in landscape value, emotional recovery and recreational behaviour. Aromatic plants (as an important specialised category of garden plants) can emit fragrance and improve the quality of the environment, soothing the body and mind, and have broad application prospects in the planning, design and construction of landscape architecture and urban ecological environments.
The existing research focuses on the extraction and identification of aromatic plant volatiles, the effects of their volatiles on human health and the creation of landscapes, and the like. However, no research has been conducted on the public attitude toward aromatic plants. Therefore, to better guide the application of aromatic plants in landscape planning and design, this study uses a questionnaire to investigate public attitudes toward aromatic plants from three perspectives: cognitive degree, emotional tendency and behavioural intention.
The three elements of public perception, emotional tendency and behavioural intention towards aromatic plants were used as the criteria for the questionnaire items in this study. Each element was set with 5~10 core questions, and the Richter scale was used for the research. Meanwhile, the gender, age and education of the respondents were taken as the basic demographic characteristics. The questionnaires were distributed through the online Questionnaire Star Platform, and 304 valid questionnaires were collected. Besides, the respondents' genders, ages and educations were normally distributed, with 58.3% aged 18~30 years old and 42.7% aged 30~60 years old. The percentage of education was 41.9% for those with a bachelor's degree or below, and 58.1% for those with a bachelor's degree or above. Through reliability and validity testing, the questionnaire was determined as highly reliable. Further, each question item could accurately reflect the study objects. Principal component analysis and maximum variance orthogonal rotation were used for exploratory factor analysis, and three principal component common factors were extracted. On this basis, data analysis was conducted.
The results showed that: (1) In terms of the value cognition of aromatic plants, the public had the highest recognition of the landscape value of aromatic plants. (2) In terms of cognition related to the effects of aromatic plants on the human body, the public paid most attention to the physical reactions caused by changes in the concentration of aromatic plants and unanimously recognised the role of aromatic plants in regulating emotions. (3) The psychological feelings caused by aromatic plants was more clear than the physiological feelings. (4) The public had a positive willingness to conduct aromatic plant-related behaviours, agreed to visit relevant places, and consumed related products and services. They were keen to smell aromatic plants in daily life and willing to popularise the knowledge of aromatic plants and paid attention to related information. (5) The cognitive level and emotional tendency of the public towards aromatic plants had significant positive effects on their behavioural intentions, and the impact of psychological emotional tendency was the greatest.
The general public's cognitive, affective and behavioural intentions are limited to a certain extent by the channels through which they obtain information and conduct behaviours. This study has shortcomings in the sample size and the depth of analysis. Further, the understanding of the public's attitude toward aromatic plants is still limited. Future research should combine the method of big data crawling analysis and traditional surveys to expand the sample size and further explore the influence of potential factors.
