Abstract:  Recent years have witnessed increasing demands on living standards, and people have begun to pay attention to the use of human perception and the environment to carry out multi-dimensional environmental aesthetic activities. This paper aims to interpret the smellscape concept in 100 Smellscapes of Japan and apply it to the rediscovery of smellscape to solve environmental problems, broaden the dimensions of environmental design, promote the smellscape industry, and improve the quality of human settlements.
To increase people's awareness of environmental pollution in recent years and meet the quality needs of the living environment, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan has begun to comprehensively promote the construction of environmental smellscapes that attach importance to human senses, such as hearing, taste, smell, and vision. This is a measure to re-translate the changes in the actual state of the environment that cannot be measured by environmental statistics and data. Selecting 100 smellscapes not only solves the problem of urban odour but also promotes the rediscovery and protection of smellscapes.
In this paper, the elements and selection standards of the 100 Smellscapes of Japan were compiled and analysed. It was found that the selected smellscapes not only included the natural smellscapes but also humanistic smellscapes such as traditional crafts and local specialities. The Ministry of the Environment hopes to take this opportunity to obtain the cooperation of various public organisations and promote the development of regions that use smellscapes for environmental protection. The natural and cultural smellscapes in the 100 Smellscapes of Japan are divided into five categories of "regional characteristics", "seasons", "history", "culture" and "tourism resources", according to the purpose of application.
In the natural smellscapes, the smellscapes and time are used as the medium to feel the seasonal changes in the characteristics of plants such as the growth period and flowering period. Pay attention to the smell intensity and time frame of the smellscapes. In the humanistic smellscapes, through the unique smell created from the unique culture and life of each region, the elements of regional "history" and "culture" are rediscovered and applied to the smellscapes design. The smellscape elements are selected according to the natural and social characteristics of the region to emphasise the personality of the city and create new smellscapes. In addition, the rediscovery process of smellscapes in Japan and some examples of the introduction of smellscapes design in cities were expanded and stated in this paper, such as the Odour Demonstration Project in Niigata and the Comprehensive Environmental Governance Project in Akita. The administrative measures for the protection of Japan's urban construction were listed. Through the interpretation of Japanese smellscapes in this paper, Japan's application of smellscapes in urban environment construction is used to assist the sustainable human settlement construction of Chinese smellscapes.
