Comfort outdoor thermal environment with good ventilation impacts citizen's living quality significantly, especially at the old residential areas. Case study on a typical old city district in Wuhan, China was conducted in the process of urban renewal. Wuhan city is famous for its adverse climate with extreme weather in both summer and winter. Taking this into account, and inspired by the previous theories on how wind passages alleviate the thermal problem, the plan to create a ventilation corridor in old city area was proposed. By constructing a comprehensive mathematical model on fluid flows and heat transfer characteristics, the factors such as ambient crosswind, natural convection and heat transfer mechanism have been considered . Comparative analysis between the original layout and the revised carried out on modeling temperature and wind speed, and measurements have been concluded to achieve favorable thermal and ventilation comfort in old inner city during the process of urban renewal.

      Abstract    PDF ( )
In the development process of urban space in China, city streets have experienced constant changes and always play an important role in connecting different areas of the city, providing daily public space and promoting trade, cultural exchange, etc. However, in the rapid urbanization process, some part of the streets at some cities in China are facing a few problems such as low environmental quality, rapid motorization and weakened public use. This paper reviewed the development history of streets in ancient China, and based on that the paper recognized the relationship with the streets and society and culture of the city. In the evolution history of the streets in Taipei City, four key factors as "small-size block", "residential and commercial mixed-use ", "legal norms" and "policy and social power" have shaped the city streets significantly. By recognizing the city streets, a possible development direction has been raised up which is consistant with the history and culture of China.

Qiaopi are remittance receipts in the form of family letters from overseas Chinese to their families in China. Qiao means "emigrants" and pi means "letters" .And laterly on Qiaopi became the financial agency between oversee and the mainland at that time and buildings were built up particularly for receiving, transferring and posting of Qiaopi, namely Qiaopi Hall, which is a very special building type of architectural culture in modern Minnan and Chaoshan area. The complex relationship between architecture and the development of social and economic in the area has been reflected in the architecture form of Qiaopi Hall. Common features are observable in different Qiaopi Hall such as diversity, dependency and hierarchy, but the difference on geographical and industrial characteristics in Minnan and Chaoshan area is clear also.

Space where the intangible cultural heritage located in traditional villages includes six categories of different function: ritual space, education space, performance space, commercial space, production space and living space. And other categories could be proposed such as micro-space, meso-space and macro-space on different scales, and dot, line and surface on different forms. Base on a systematic analysis, the conservation strategies have been optimized as followed. Firstly, emphasising a cultural space of heritage through community empowerment; secondly, integrated conservation with the reconsideration of space composition; last but not the leaset, authentic conservation to maintain the original form of the space.

High-rise residence, which is the product of modern Western design concept but none of the idea of tradtional Chinese courtyard, have emerged frequently in metropolitan area of China. How to learn and apply the traditional culture into modern architecture design is a bounden duty of all architects. Plate high-rise residence is a basic form combined with a variety of prototype plans, which is commonly used in the construction of affordable housing of multi-family units. Generally the more households planned at one flat, the poor living environment it could be. Integrating the idea of traditional Chinese courtyard into high-rise residence would be a good chance to create good living environment and healthy neighborhood as well.
