Abstract: Traditional settlements and dwellings reflect the experience and wisdom of local residents, along with traditional culture. Yi settlements are a part of traditional Chinese culture, whose unique natural geographical environment and cultural background are the base for most regional architectures. These architectural forms and relevant influencing factors have significant research value. However, with changes in lifestyle, the functional attributes of typical spaces, such as fireplaces and eaves in the Yi settlements, have disappeared gradually. Accordingly, the spiritual attributes of these architectures are not maintained, significantly reducing the prevalence of such architectural characteristics in traditional areas. Existing studies on Yi dwellings mainly focus on the dwellings themselves. Only a few studies have analyzed the overall characteristics of the buildings—on the small scale—to settlement spaces on the large scale. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, no study on the application of fractal isomorphism to Yi dwellings has been reported to date. Based on a literature review and empirical studies, the fractural isomorphism characteristics of a Yi settlement in Chuxiong were investigated from their core of social culture to their spatial forms, through a combination of fractural isomorphism and qualitative analyses. For Yi settlements in Chuxiong, spatial similarities on different scales and levels, as well as similar features among different socio-cultural classes carried in the architectural forms, were discussed. On this basis, it was concluded that spatial forms of Yi settlements are highly consistent with the social culture, lifestyle, and religious customs. Moreover, some qualitative assessment approaches, such as the graphical feature descriptions of the spatial order of Yi settlements in Chuxiong based on the aforementioned fractal isomorphism, were summarized. In this study, new settlements of multilayer primary single buildings and planned building groups were designed and applied through a case study in Lifang Village, Shuangbai County, Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, Yunnan Province. Furthermore, multilayer dwelling spaces, which carry collective memories, were rebuilt; the possibility of building new houses and settlements from the perspective of fractal isomorphism was discussed, aiming to renew interest in regional traditions and future design plans. Moreover, the Yi settlements in different regions have different layouts and architectural styles, which are related to differences in geographical distribution, social economy, and culture. The analysis in this study, however, was not comprehensive since only representative villages of Yi heritage in Chuxiong were involved. For instance, most attention was paid to single buildings in the seal shape, which were developed from early extravert-oriented residential houses and influenced by Han culture, the geography, and the local climate during the extraction of fractal isomorphism features. Therefore, it is expected that applying fractal isomorphism to new residential buildings can provide more ways to explore and create modern regional architectural features.
