Abstract: Regional culture has become an important reference and influencing factor in architectual design with significance for economic performance and aesthetics in modern times. In modern times, great change has taken place in the regional buildings of Chongqing against the social background of opening ports, established marketing systems, and anti-Japanese war in Peidu. Subsequently, under the dual influences of national reform policy and more open borders, the regional architectural development of Chongqing exhibited modern design exploration by combining the green, sustainable, and intelligent architectual theories proposed in the new century. Reviewing modern regional buildings in Chongqing, the "courtyard" space is evident in modern regional architectual development. It has developed from the traditional courtyard to modern residential houses, and to contemporary courtyard spaces in public buildings. This evolution of courtyard spaces in Chongqing is significant to the study of modern regional buildings in the area. 
　　This study examines the courtyard space of regional buildings in Chongqing as the central research object. Based on study of courtyards in traditional residential buildings, courtyard space practices in modern times were analyzed via typology and formal parsing. Firstly, spatial elements of courtyard spaces in modern residential buildings and public buildings in Chongqing were extracted and then classified according to major architectual types. Features of the classified courtyard spaces were described according to the main building functions. Contemporary architectual freatures of regional buildings in Chongqing were summarized according to courtyard features, internal structural features, spatial elements, and planar spatial features from global and local perspectives. Subsequently, elements of courtyard spaces in modern residual buildings and public buildings in Chongqing were extracted. By analyzing modern practices, the courtyard space features of modern and contenporary regional buildings were summarized according to classification of land use properties through reconstruction and translation. Based on literature review regarding courtyard spaces in modern times, the evolution of modern courtyard spaces was summarized. Meanwhile, the dynamic mechanisms and influencing factors of courtyard space development in modern times were analyzed, and its evolution process was described.
　　Based on the traditional courtyard space paradigms of local buildings in Chongqing, the courtyard space evolution of modern regional buildings in Chongqing were analyzed using typology and formal parsing to determine the overall functional structures of courtyard spaces and elements of specific courtyard and building spaces. This study systematically examined courtyard spaces of regional buildings in Chongqing from the perspective of sustainable development. The evolution of the courtyard space model was compared to the development of modern regional buildings in Chongqing, providing a new research perspective for the development modern regional buildings in the area. These results provide references for research, design, and theoretical studies on development of regional buildings in Chongqing.
