Abstract: The existing plans lack focus on residential segregation of multi-income groups, and the concepts of cognition and practical operation of a mixed communities continue to be vague. This study analyzes the internal logic of residential segregation, draws on the basic concepts and practical experiences of mixed communities in other countries, and discusses the feasible model and optimization suggestions of mixed communities in territorial spatial planning. The results show that to deal with the economic and social problems caused by the residential differentiation of multi-income groups, a mixed community with mixed-income, mixed-property rights, and mixed-buildings should be designed, and a two-dimensional mixed layout of "gradient-embedded" or a three-dimensional mixed layout of "block-floor-household" should be selected as appropriate in space. In territorial spatial planning, more importance should be attached to the planning and design of mixed communities. Only by reasonably planning location selection, spatial layout, mixed goals, scale and proportion, form of property rights, building mode, infrastructure, public services, and industrial development of mixed communities, can the social contradictions of unbalanced development be alleviated effectively, and the organic integration of social groups and the sustainable development of economy and society be promoted.
