Abstract: The connotations and forms of pavilions are explored, through a study of the origin and meaning of "pavilion". This has changed from a grand high pavilion hall and observatory-extended military training place, into a place in classical gardens for literary people to view, relax, perform, and meet visitors. Based on the statistics of poems and historical data, the waterside pavilion was the main form in Chinese classical gardens. The spatial layout, scales and material properties are explored. The discussion of the cultural properties of pavilions is embodied in the study of ancient people's methods and means to express traditional culture and thought in the building of waterside structures. There are valuable lessons in both the spatial processing techniques and the cultural connotation of architecture as reflected in the ancient Chinese waterside pavilion.

Key words: pavilions, classical gardens, evolution of connotation, spatial layout, cultural connotation
