Abstract: Conflicts in old residential areas in big cities in China are increasingly prominent as it enters into the urban stock and updating stage. The lack of public spaces in communities strongly affects people's way of living, as well as their physical and mental health. As a result, community gardens not only can improve the public's environmental quality in the community, but also are regarded as a spatial carrier that connects "public participation" and "micro-updating". Consequently, the positive significance of the community garden is accepted by the public more gradually. Moreover, the concept of social innovations has been widely used and developed in China. As one of the most important manifestation forms of social innovation, community gardens are accompanied by social innovation significance: space and social affairs in the community are viewed as resources to solve complicated problems in the community through bottom-up innovations. However, the existing works in the literature on community gardens from the perspective of social innovation mainly focus on the potential ways of participation, but the contact process of participants is ignored. Hence, the application of the concept of social innovation is limited. Along these lines, to systematically explore the internal connection between social innovation and community garden practices, a case study based on the Zhusigang Community Garden was carried out in this work. The collaborative organizational construction and contact process in the Zhusigang Community Garden were also thoroughly analyzed by the relevant theoretical studies and a field survey, from the perspective of social innovation. Meanwhile, the achievements and sustainable challenges were elaborated.
Firstly, the collaborative organization of the Zhusigang Community Garden was composed of ordinary residents, volunteers, and third parties like Fei Art Museum. On this basis, information sharing among all parties is realized by the social network platforms, which can build mutual trust and maintain some degree of openness. Secondly, the collaborative contact of the Zhusigang Community Garden is divided into three interactions according to the way of participation and roles. Meanwhile, the types, strengths, and variations of the relationships in the different stages of the contact process were analyzed by using the participant intervention and interaction quality maps. Through the practice of the Zhusigang Community Garden, a practical spatial updating effect was attained, the communication among residents was enhanced, and the self-organizing power of the community was activated. However, it was terminated after half a year of operation for many reasons. More specifically, because of land ownership, fund raising, as well as responsibility and rights in operation management, the community gardens represented by Zhusigang Community Garden can only provide limited services to the community temporarily. On the one hand, the practice of the Zhusigang Community Garden has comparative advantages in professional planning, a big population of participants, and great social influences. On the other hand, big challenges in sustainable development exist.
From a general point of view, the practices of Zhusigang Community Garden were summarized from the perspective of social innovation, where experiences available for reference in two aspects can be found: (1) the multi-governing collaborative organization is considered the basis for successful construction and professional designers play an extremely important role in organizational construction since they can design several structures to strengthen the basis of the organizational trust. Moreover, professional support to more residents can be provided, the degree of their positive participation is increased and thereby the construction and strengthening the sustainable development under various constraints can be achieved. (2) Designers shall jump out of imprisonment of the traditional thinking and recognize the available resources in the community through basic investigation and data review. Meanwhile, designers shall make full use of all the available resources in the community through various strategies and at the same time improve the participation degree of residents to the maximum extent. Compared with the previously reported ideas, community gardens of social innovations shall emphasize top-down innovations toward sustainable transformation. Hence, it is regarded as an innovative idea and way to introduce social innovation into the construction of community gardens.
