Research on the Economic Connection and Spatial Pattern of Five Provinces,
Districts, and Counties in Central China: Based on Improved Gravity Model
and Analysis Method of Social Network

Abstract

Abstract: The previous economic connection based on urban data is extended to the district and county levels. This is based on 582 districts and counties in five provinces in central China and by considering the continuous development of the regional transportation network and adopting the time distance cost method. The gravity model is improved, and the economic connection matrix is built. The social network analysis is adopted to identify and analyze the network density, network centrality, and cohesive subgroups within the five provinces. By analyzing the characteristics of the network structures of the five provinces, regions, and counties in central China,as an important strategic fulcrum of central China, the status of Wuhan's metropolitan region in the five central provinces is re-examined. The results show that: First, the urban agglomeration in central China is developing rapidly, but the differences in economic development between the urban agglomerations are quite prominent.Second, while Wuhan's metropolitan region's network density is much higher than the average level of the five central provinces, it is faced with great pressure arising from the competition with the Changzhutan and Central Plains urban agglomerations. Third, Wuhan, Changsha, and Zhengzhou's capabilities concerning economic radiation are significant, among which Changsha and Wuhan play an important role in economic media. Fourth,a cluster analysis shows that the city clusters' hinterland economy in the five central provinces has the distinctive characteristic of an inter-provincial administrative barrier, and the marketization degree of city clusters is not high.

摘要： 将以往基于城市数据的经济联系度扩展到区县层面，以中部五省582 个区县数据为基础，考虑到区域交通网络的不断发展，结合时间距离成本法改进引力模型并构建经济联系度矩阵，运用社会网络分析法对五省范围内网络密度、网络中心度、凝聚子群进行识别和剖析。通过分析中部五省区县间的网络结构特征，重新审视作为中部重要战略支点的武汉城市圈在中部五省的现状地位。结果表明：①中部地区城市群发展迅速，但各城市群间的经济发展差异较为显著。 ②武汉城市圈的网络密度虽远高于中部五省平均水平，但面临长株潭城市群和中原城市群的有力竞争。③武汉、长沙、郑州的经济辐射能力均十分突出，其中长沙市和武汉市的经济媒介作用更显著。④聚类分析表明中部五省内各城市群形成的腹地仍具有明显的省际行政壁垒效应，城市群的市场化程度不高。
