Abstract: As a brand-new industry category, the cultural creative industry empowers other traditional industries through digital technologies. A large number of jobs are generated, which play an important role in promoting the national economy. The cultural creative industry has evolved from individual enterprises to industrial chains and clusters. Therefore, clarifying the characteristics of spatial agglomeration and the mechanism of evolution of the cultural creative industry can facilitate policy transformation and upgradation. Based on the spatial and temporal data of cultural creative enterprises in Guangzhou in 2022 and gaming industry in 2000-2022, the spatial layout of the cultural creative industry was analyzed by estimating the kernel density and determining the nearest neighborhood index across different regions and industrial categories. An empirical study based on the gaming industry, which is a part of cultural creative industry, was carried out. The evolution of the spatial layout of the gaming industry was investigated using the standard deviation ellipse and other methods. A multiple linear regression model was further constructed based on location, transportation, land price, facilities, talents, industry and policy to analyse the mechanisms of spatial evolution of the game industry in Guangzhou. The study findings are as follows: (1) The cultural creative industry in Guangzhou is strongly concentrated at the city centre under the influence of market, cultural context, technology, resources and policies. "Multi-centre" small-scaled clusters exist in the periphery of the central area, and generally constitute the "core-periphery" layout. (2) Market-oriented and regional clusters, auxiliary technological and resource clusters as well as policy-oriented clusters of cultural creative industry appear in the central urban area, and northern and southern developmental regions. (3) Intelligent tourism, film and gaming industries are highly concentrated at the urban centre and exhibit non-point distribution. The animation industry is distributed in a non-point pattern in the urban centre, with point distributions in Nancun Wanbo in the Panyu District. The digital music and cultural creative industries mainly exhibit non-point distribution in urban centres, and point distributions in the peripheral areas. The live broadcasting industry is concentrated along the West Road (e.g., Xinshi, Huangshi and Helong) of Yuncheng City and airport highway in the Baiyun District except for a non-point cluster in the urban centre. Small clusters of VR/AR industries in the preliminary development stage together with several point clusters in have been found in the urban centre, union street of Huangpu District, Nancun Wanbo in Panyu District, and other areas. (4) The game industry has experienced three stages of development dominated by client end, page game, and mobile game. The gaming enterprises in Guangzhou showed a concentrated distribution in 2008-2022 under the influence of agglomeration economy, enterprise derivation, policy regulation, and other factors. However, changes in location, intensity and spatial distribution of core clusters have been observed. The spatial pattern of the gaming industry has evolved from single-centre clusters to double-centre clusters and co-existing clusters and diffusion towards the eastern and southern regions. This is consistent with the four developmental strategies of "development toward east", "expansion toward south", "connection in west" and "optimization in north" proposed by Overall Urban Development Strategic Plan of Guangzhou City. It reflects the structural and evolutionary characteristics of urban space in Guangzhou over the recent 20 years. An empirical study based on gaming industry representing the cultural creative industry was conducted via qualitative and quantitative analyses. It partly reveals the foundation, spatial layout characteristics, evolution path, and the influencing mechanisms of cultural creative industry in Guangzhou. The study provides a standard of reference for high-quality development of cultural creative industry in Guangzhou, and also facilitates decision-making to optimise spatial configuration and management of cultural creative industry in other regions around China.
