Research on the Transmission Method of Organic Renewal Intention in the Striation Waterfront from the Perspective of "Symbiosis": A Case Study based on the Renovation Practice of "Da Wen-Tian Yi" Waterfront in Nansha

Abstract: The striation waterfronts formed in the sandy areas of Guangzhou are one of the characteristic landform types of Lingnan waterfronts. With the increasing demands for urban development, many striation waterfronts have contributed toward urban renewal. The short-term economic liquidity for renovation and reconstruction was insufficient due to the restricted land use of striation waterfronts. The current "real estate" reconstruction logic orienting to economic benefits quickly has caused many problems, such as the loss of distinct waterfront forms and the cultural inheritance breakdown of waterfronts. This study recognizes and creates a good "man village water" symbiotic relationship during the renewal process to overcome the limitations of existing studies to assure the effective conduction of protective development intentions of integrity, diversity, and sustainability of striation waterfronts. A transmission method of the organic renewal intention of striation waterfronts under the symbiotic perspective is proposed, thus providing some references for the high-quality renewal and transmission of Lingnan waterfronts in China.
  First, this paper attempts to build an operating mechanism that couples the organic renewal of striation waterfronts with the concept of symbiosis and creates a full-process technical framework based on the three dimensions of symbiosis environment, symbiosis unit, and symbiosis interface. Second, the critical structural and spatial elements are extracted by analyzing the regional characteristic values of striation waterfronts with a pedigree of 72 symbiotic elements in 11 categories is built. In this way, the organic renewal intentions of striation waterfronts are transmitted to control indicators level by level. Finally, proposes an organic update path with practical and reference value with specific update cases. With respect to general transmission, strategies such as comprehensive land reclamation, overall planning of large-scale land areas, and progressive rolling implementation are proposed. The overall spatial framework of striation waterfronts is formulated, thus achieving the balance between functions and capacity. For small-scale unit management and control, approaches such as identifying the waterfront prototypes, delineating the waterfront renewal units, extracting key characteristic elements, formulating ideal modules, and integrating with management and control indicators are presented. Through these strategies, the index information of waterfront renewal units can be transformed into metagraph and planning management unit rules, successfully connecting organic renewal indicators and a detailed regulatory planning system. In terms of regional scene reconstruction, methods, such as industry introduction, space creation, and environmental repair, are proposed. Furthermore, a small-scale progressive renewal plan involving multiple parties is devised to facilitate the economic, cultural, and people's livelihood development needs of waterfronts.
  Based on the abovementioned methods, the benign mutual promotion of the symbiotic relationship of "human-village-water" in striation waterfronts is achieved effectively. First, the symbiotic environment shifts from "spreading in fragments" to "integral harmony", avoiding the disordered spreading of the waterfront space and improving fragmented land use patterns. Second, the symbiotic unit changes from "disordered and single" to "multivariate integration", which strengthens "generality" and "individuality" while assuring the overall coordinated landform of waterfronts. Third, the symbiosis interface evolves from "dilapidated depression" to "sustained vitality". Cooperative construction and progressive renewal techniques activate the economic, social, and cultural vitality of striation waterfronts. This outcome has been proven by the renovation practice of the "Da Wen-Tian Yi" waterfront in Nansha, where the symbiotic environment element is the core control element of striation waterfronts. And the element must be integrated into the existing planning system by combining rigid control and flexible guidance. The management of small-scale units is the core step in the transmission of waterfront intentions, which can effectively coordinate the relationship between the waterfront renewal unit and planning management units; offset shortcomings of the existing planning system in the control and guidance of characteristic features; and implement organic renewal intentions.

摘要: 线型水乡是岭南水乡的特色风貌类型之一,随着城市发展需求的日益增长,大量线型水乡参与到城市更新当中。以经济账为本的“房地产”改造逻辑,导致产生水乡特色形态丧失、水乡文化传承断裂等一系列问题。为确保将线型水乡整体性、多元性、可持续性的有机更新意图有效传导,提出一种基于“人-村-水”共生关系视阈下有机更新意图传导方法:建立运行机制和技术框架,构建共生要素谱系,提炼关键管控要素,进而实现多维有机更新意图。结合南沙实践案例,提出总体引导、小规模单元管控、地域性场景建构等有机更新路径,为我国岭南水乡高质量更新改造提供参考。
