Abstract: The salt industry has been one of the pillar industries in the coastal area of Guangdong since the Song Dynasty. Danshui Saltworks, the earliest salt field in Renping Peninsula, can be traced back to the Northern Song Dynasty. After the Ming and Qing Dynasty, Bijia Saltworks and Dazhou Saltworks were expanded from the Danshui Saltworks, forming a tripartite production pattern. Industrial production of salt has brought significant landscape changes in coastal regions in Guangdong Province, creating industrial and residential landscapes which are completely different from the traditional agricultural landscape. As a result, saltworks settlement became one of the most typical modes in coastal areas in Guangdong. Relevant studies are necessary to get an overall understanding of settlement patterns in Guangdong.
In this study, natural base characteristics of the salt industry landscape in Guangdong Province were analyzed based on a case study of Dazhou Saltworks in Renping Peninsula by combining regional environmental history, salt industrial history, geography, and landscape architecture. Moreover, a salt industrial landscape system was built from aspects of production, distribution, and residential settlement using four levels: system-subsystem-functional units-elements. During the construction of such a system, place of origin, distribution area, and residential area are three essential aspects that form the three large subsystems. The smooth operation of subsystems relies on collaborative promotion of multi-functional units.
This study attempted to summarize salt industrial landscape characteristics in coastal regions in Renping Peninsula, Guangdong as well as relevant internal mechanisms and motivations. It found that salt production depends not only on the natural environment with appropriate water and soils, but also reasonable reconstruction of natural landscapes by salt farmers. With respect to site selection for salt settlement, it requires seawater, intertidal zones, and waves simultaneously. Moreover, coastal regions with highly salty, broad intertidal zones and steady wind speed are highly suitable. The secondary utilization and reconstruction of the natural environment by salt farmers mainly manifests in production-distribution-dwelling, thus forming the salt industrial landscape system. On the production landscape, the flood prevention unit and tidal pool unit meet the safety requirements of tidal introduction, while the pool sunshine unit and storage unit meet the technological requirements for salt and sunshine. On the distribution landscape, a linear transportation chain of land-sea-river was formed. The distribution mode of short-distance land transportation collection, mid-distance sea shipping, and long-distance river transport was applied, which reflected the order of industrial salt transportation. Regarding the dwelling landscape, the spatial relationship of nearby salt production between the dwelling place and place of origin was presented. The village fair space became an essential place for salt farmers to get survival materials, to meet their living needs.
Generally speaking, this study provides some practical insights into the salt industrial landscape in coastal regions in Guangdong and promotes revitalization of salt settlements. With the rapid urbanization in Guangdong, the traditional salt production industry has declined under the current times and social economy. Attenuation of salt field areas in coastal region has accelerated in recent years. Many salt fields are transformed into urban land, thus causing significant damage to the salt industrial landscape. Other questions, such as how to protect the traditional salt industry landscape and drive reasonable transformation, and how to explore new methods for revitalization of salt settlements by combining new opportunities for rural revitalization, must be studied further and perfected in future urbanization processes.
